Graham Rowlands, Managing Director at Devitech, discusses the benefits of upgrading EV chargers with payment terminals for contactless transactions.
New regulations call for contactless transactions
Since earlier this year, all public EV chargers installed that are faster than 8kw are required to offer contactless transaction options. Contactless transactions are already adopted in many other situations, from vending machines to self-service petrol stations, as it makes the experience of paying quick and easy.
This pivotal change means that users will no longer need to rely on smartphone apps to initiate the payment process. Instead, customers can pay using widely accepted methods such as Apple Pay or Google Pay through the EV charger itself.
Understanding the significance for EV drivers
For EV drivers, this development signifies the seamless integration of contactless payment infrastructure directly into the design of EV chargers, offering a user-friendly and intuitive operational experience. With contactless bank card and RFID readers located next to a single information screen, complete with clear instructions, ensures a straightforward payment process, prioritising ease and efficiency for the user.
This change eliminates the need for multiple payment apps and streamlines the payment process, simplifying the EV charging experience for all.
