We’ve shared a guide discussing whether you should charge your staff, the advantages and the payment models you can consider.

The advantages of charging employees to use EV stations

Create a new business revenue stream

Charging for EV stations can help you create a new revenue stream, whether you charge per use or as a monthly price for regular users. This can be an additional stream, building on your profits or helping you gain more income to grow your business overall. This can also recover the costs, as installing EV infrastructure is an investment, even with the grants in place.

Attracting new visitors to your business

Charging for EV sessions is beneficial because it allows you to build a revenue stream, attract new visitors to your business, gain brand recognition, establish a sustainable reputation, and secure a core location where visitors can charge their cars.

Reasons to allow employees to charge their EV for free

Employee benefits

Providing free or low-cost charging is an employee incentive which can increase job satisfaction, retention and provide financial support to your staff. The free charging aspect can help their daily convenience and reduce the worry of where to charge or how long it’ll be between charging sessions. It also shows you’re aligning with the same goals as your employees who have invested in electric vehicles.

Incentive for EV adoption

Free charging for employees can create an incentive to switch to electric vehicles, as they know their workplace will support their charging needs. It also means the company can meet its sustainability targets if more employees invest in electric vehicles.

Future-proof your business

The demand for EV charging points is increasing, and investing in EV infrastructure means you’re future-proofing your business. Whether it’s supporting employees with their EV vehicles, attracting EV users when on the road to find a nearby station and earn from it or gain recognition as an eco-friendly business.

Should you charge your staff for using EV stations?

There are advantages to free EV charging sessions and charging for those sessions for your employees; the answer to whether you should or not depends on your business and financial goals.

Offering free EV charging sessions can be a significant incentive for employees, while charging for sessions can help you earn an additional revenue stream and put your business on the map as an EV charging spot. Overall, the question is whether supporting your employees is your largest priority or the costs of running your business and building profit.

Grants to utilise for EV infrastructure investment

Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS)

The Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) is a voucher-based scheme that provides eligible applicants with support towards the upfront costs of the installation of electric vehicle (EV) chargepoints.

You can claim up to 75% of the cost of an EV infrastructure (£350 per socket and 40 sockets across all sites), or up to £14,000. This grant is open to businesses, charities and public sector organisations that meet the applicant and site eligibility criteria.

The EV infrastructure grant for staff and fleets

The EV infrastructure grant for staff and fleets is for small-to-medium-sized businesses (no more than 249 employees) in the UK.

This grant covers up to 75% of EV infrastructure installation costs with a limit of £15,000 per grant. Every business can receive up to £350 per chargepoint socket installed and £500 per parking space enabled with supporting infrastructure.

Applying for grants process with Devitech support:

  • Devitech will survey your site and provide a quote.
  • You complete an online application for a grant.
  • The grant voucher code is awarded and sent to Devitech (pre-project start)
  • Devitech carries out the installation and test report.

How to price your EV charging sessions

Price models for EV chargers in carparks:

  • Loyalty pricing for regular EV charging: The ideal type for employees, as they’ll park for their shift every day and can rely on charging their vehicle at a reasonable price.
  • Pay-as-you-go EV charging: Visitors or customers pay each time they visit your business and use the charge point, attracting new and recurring visitors.
  • Free EV charging: This isn’t a direct revenue stream; however, this long-term investment can align with organic business growth and support your employees.
